Also known as "The Merry Cocker" the American Cocker Spaniel breed standard defines the ideal dog as being "equable in temperament with no suggestion of timidity". American Cockers have rounder eyes, shorter muzzles and more clearly pronounced eye-brows that the English Cocker, whose head is more setter-like. The American Cocker seems to have a perpetually wagging tail. They prefer to be around people, and will not do well if relegated to the backyard alone. With their gentle natures, Cockers can be easily stressed by loud noises or rough treatment or handling. On intelligence tests, the American Cocker performed best when tested on its ability to show restraint and delayed response to a trigger, thought to be due to the breed's innate instinct when hunting to freeze when finding a bird before flushing it out.
